About Malcolm Farrow
I grew up in Sussex and studied at the West Sussex College of Design, Worthing, and Wimbledon School of Art, completing a degree in painting in 1987, and an MA in printmaking in 1990. Since 1992 I've has lived in Suffolk on the east coast of the United Kingdom and until quite recently I've found lots of good excuses not to continue making art. However, the Coronavirus pandemic reminded me that the clock is ticking and that I couldn't take tomorrow for granted. It also led me to see again the potential of making art to explore things that seem important.
About my work
My main interest is nature and the countryside, and the impact of humans on the world around us. The website features a mix of paintings, 'digital paintings', drawings and photographs. Most of my work is done in the landscape directly from nature.
The digital paintings were made using Procreate software on an iPad Pro using techniques that, to an extent, mirror those of real painting. While different to real painting I see this as just another creative tool - it's simply a different option with its own strengths and weaknesses. A key strength is that the finished artworks can be displayed electronically or reproduced as high quality giclée prints, making them something akin to traditional printmaking. It's perhaps best to consider these as an alternative to lithography, a printing process that also mimics the look of painting.
